Crash drunk drove with car on fire

-

A FRUIT picker who drove while three times over the drink- drive limit and with his car on FIRE has been fined.

Densly Bongnaim, 34, pleaded guilty to drunk- driving and dangerous driving.

Police prosecutor Sgt Penny Stratford said Bongnaim had been driving near Cromwell, New Zealand, in the early hours when he crashed his car into the verge.

He punctured a tyre but continued driving. This caused the rubber to be stripped from the wheel, but Bongnaim continued driving on the steel rim.

The steel rim created sparks, and set the front of his car on fire.

When stopped by police, Bongnaim said he had drunk “some” beer, Stratford said.

Lawyer Tanya McCullum told the court Bongnaim, from the island of Vanuatu, had been working as a fruit picker on a worker’s visa and that he was “unused to alcohol”.

Judge Garland fined Bongnaim £ 500 for drink- driving and £ 150 for driving dangerously. He also disqualified Bongnaim from driving for nine months. – Tim Vine
