But John BrookeDavids takes “careful” to a whole new level.

For despite scooping a cool £ 1.6million on the National Lottery three years ago, John, 62, lives a lifestyle that makes most misers look like skinflints.

The former freelance rag and bone man:

Smokes dog ends he finds in the street;

Eats discarded bags of chips from bins;

Sups cider and lager from glasses left on walls outside pubs overnight and;

Dresses in rags so he can use a food bank.

Of his obsessive economy, John, of Congleton, Cheshire, said: “I’ve not always been a millionaire.

“When I were an apprentice rag and bone man I was so poor my piss didn’t even steam. I was so poor that church mice pitied me.

“So I learned to cut my cloth – even if that cloth was a gypsy’s old arse wipe some days.

“You don’t lose the habits of a lifetime thanks to a bit of luck on the Lotto.

“Women? I won’t have ’ em near. Bloodsuckers, the lot of them. Just after my brass.”

John also defended his use of food banks – designed to feed the poor and needy.

He said: “If they’re going to give away free grub, I’ll be first in the queue. If I wasn’t eating it, it would go to some sponger who’s wasted all his benefits down the pub or bought his kids ruddy computer games! Scum. Subhuman scum.”

Neighbours living near John refused to give their names for fear of reprisals.

But one said he’s “a bit weird” while another described the bachelor as “rather scary”. CAREFUL WITH HIS MONEY: ‘ Scary’ John
