THE GOLDEN GLOBE AWARDS
Things you might not know about
THE Golden Globe Awards are in crisis because the wokerati have decided they are not “diverse” enough.
Tom Cruise has handed back his three gongs in protest, and NBC, which has aired the event since 1996, says it won’t broadcast the ceremony next year.
Of course, nobody cares if a ceremony where overpaid and underbrained actors slap each other on the back goes tits- up.
But what are the Golden Globes? Here are some facts you may not have known… 1FIRST
awarded in 1944 to recognise excellence in film, the Golden Globes are second only to the Oscars in prestige. 2THE
Awards are bestowed by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. 3THE
first awards were not globes but scrolls. The globe design came in 1945.
4AWARDS
for TV productions were first presented in 1955. 5THE
Golden Globes were not regularly broadcast on TV until the early 1980s.
6
UNTIL La La Land dominated with seven wins in 2017,
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest ( 1975) was the only film to win Globes in all five major categories ( Best Motion Picture, Actor, Actress, Director and Screenplay). La La Land earned those plus Best Original Song and Best Original Score.
7THE
youngest Globes winner ever is Ricky Schroder, who was nine years old when he won the Globe for Best New Star of the Year in the 1980 film The Champ. 8THERE
has only been one three- way tie in the history of the Globes, and that was between Jodie Foster ( The Accused), Shirley MacLaine ( Madame Sousatzka) and Sigourney Weaver ( Gorillas in the Mist) for Best Actress in
1989.
9AT
age 87, Ennio Morricone became the oldest Golden Globe
Award winner, nabbing Best Original Score for 2015’ s The Hateful Eight. 10
IN 2020 Brit comic Ricky Gervais provoked uproar by taking the piss out of Hollywood’s great and good. He finished his opening monologue with: “So if you win, come up, accept your little award, thank your agent, and your God, and f*** off, OK?”
