• 1908: The Olympics opened at London’s White City. A total of 2,036 athletes from 23 nations took part in the Games which ended with the hosts topping the medals table with 145 medals – including 56 golds.

• 1924: The FA Cup final between Newcastle and Aston Villa at Wembley was the first time the game had been an all- ticket affair.

• 1956: Rocky Marciano retired as the undefeated heavyweigh­t champion of the world after 49 consecutiv­e victories.

• 1989: Peter

Scudamore became the first National Hunt jockey to ride 200 winners in a season.

• 1991: Ellery Hanley skippered Wigan to a 13-8 win over St

Helens in the

Challenge Cup final at Wembley and became the first man in the history of the game to captain his side to victory three years in succession.

• 2000: Ruud van Nistelrooy’s record £ 18.5million transfer to Manchester United from PSV Eindhoven collapsed after the Dutch club would not agree to United’s extra fitness tests on the striker’s injured knee. The player eventually moved to Old Trafford the following year.

• 2001: Scotland defender Colin Hendry was banned for six internatio­nal matches and fined £ 4,500 for elbowing San Marino substitute Nicola

Albani in the throat during a World Cup qualifier at Hampden Park. It turned out to be his 51st and last cap before retirement.

• 2005: The Royal & Ancient Club voted in principle to allow women to compete in the Open Championsh­ip.

• 2006: Gareth Jenkins was appointed as Wales’ new coach to replace 2005 Grand Slam- winning boss Mike Ruddock, who resigned from the post earlier in the year.

• 2008: Tottenham signed Croatia midfielder Luka Modric from Dinamo Zagreb for a deal worth around £ 16.5million.

• 2012: Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola revealed he would leave the Catalan club at the end of the season.

• 2017: Marouane Fellaini was sent off for a headbutt on Sergio Aguero as Manchester City and Manchester United drew 0-0 at the Etihad Stadium.

• 2018: Andres Iniesta announced he would be leaving Barcelona at the end of the season, ending a 21year associatio­n with the club.

• 2019: Norwich secured promotion to the Premier League by beating Blackburn 2- 1.
