Reporter THE city was lit up last night to highlight Newcastle United’s proud history on its birthday.

The club crest and black and white stripes were projected onto landmarks around Newcastle and the Quayside to mark United’s 125th anniversary.

Hundreds of fans were able to see the images as they headed to and from St James’ Park for the team’s Premier League game against Leicester City.

Among the sites lit up, as the sun set last night, were the Millennium Bridge, the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art and Newcastle’s Central Station.

Toon manager Rafa Benitez and Sir Bobby Robson were among the faces projected onto the Baltic.

The building also displayed images of previous NUFC teams and momentous occasions as well as a spectacular picture of the Greatest XI, as voted by ChronicleLive readers in an online survey.

Around 8,000 supporters submitted their line-ups, both online and via post, to pick their favourite players.

And the top names included stars such as Alan Shearer, Bob Moncur, Peter Beardsley and Paul Gascoigne.

Fans arriving for the match on the train were also greeted by Central Station’s tribute to the club.

The station, managed by Virgin Trains, featured the team’s 125th anniversary gold crest as well as a black and white striped display.
