Frankly great turnout for memorial match

- BY ALAN CHARLTON BY MARK ARMSTRONG

WHAT a finish there was in the Frank Oldham memorial match, with good bags well into double figures coming in all the time it would take an exceptional bag to win.

Many thought Jade Nicholson of Newbiggin had done it with his bag of seven cod for 20lb 10oz taken at Hauxley.

Then rumours came in that Geoff King had a big bag fishing at Cambois.

King, after getting someone to help carry his bag as he was recovering from knee surgery, eventually arrived at the weigh-in, plonked his fish on the scales and all eyes where on the dial. It settled down at 20lb 13oz, snatching the title from Nicholson, who had the consolation of landing the heaviest fish, a cod of 4lb 12oz.

Steve Harper was third with seven cod for 14lb 2oz, taken from West Bay. Matty Robson, fishing Blyth pier, took the junior title with two whiting and a coalfish for 2lb 1oz, his biggest whiting also taking the specimen award.

The organisers were delighted with the turnout with quite a few anglers, who had given up fishing, turning out to pay their respects to Frank. There were bigger fish taken on the day by anglers not in the competition; Billy Steel fishing at Lynemouth took one of 7lb 14oz.

There have been plenty of fish all down the coast with 20lb bags reported from Amble to Whitby. Bags of up to a dozen fish were taken from rock marks, piers and beaches, with fish to 5lb from Whitley Beach, Blyth Beach and pier, Newbiggin Bay, Ryhope, Marsden and Whitburn.

The Tyne has also started to produce fish to 3lb from the up river marks. The Wear had given reasonable catches of flounder with codling and whiting showing after dark. Most anglers have been staying local with the fishing so good, however Brain Scott, while over on a short break at his caravan with the family, had a dabble off a sheltered rock mark at Kircudbright and landed a personal best conger of 12lb 10oz.

A few have also tried Balcary w i t h o n l y a few whit- ing, dogfish and pollock for their efforts. Codling have started to show from Cumbrian marks along with dab, flounder and the odd bass.
