Tories should admit ‘terrible mistake’ on steelworks

Simon Clarke MP From left, Sue Jeffrey, Jeremy Corbyn and Lauren Dingsdale on a visit to Saltburn yesterday rail services were disrupted due to the ongoing dispute between the RMT union and Northern Rail over the issue of guards on trains. He said: “The solution is railway companies listen to what all of us are telling them. We want safety on our trains. “Andy [McDonald] and I have been with the RMT members this morning. We want safety on our trains which means no driver-only operation.” Mr Corbyn added: “It means having a guard on the trains – it’s safer for the train, it’s safer for the passengers. “That’s why it’s down to that company to deal with it and think about this – the Government has presided over the privatisation of our rail network – we will bring it back into public ownership so that we, the public, who own the lines, will have control over the services.” Conservative MP Simon Clarke, who won the Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland seat in 2017, released a statement about Mr Corbyn’s visit. He said: “Today Jeremy Corbyn is coming to Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland. “He is without a doubt the single biggest reason local people rejected Labour at last year’s general election. “A Corbyn government would be weak on terror and national security and would leave millions of people out of work. “His visit serves as a reminder that the stakes at the next general election will be incredibly high, and that if we’re to keep Teesside and the UK moving forward, we need responsible Government rather than a hardleft extremist. “In that sense, Mr Corbyn is welcome to venture out of North London as often as he wants.”
