Always something to learn from others for Williamson

DARLINGTON boxing prospect Troy Williamson is a real student of the game. The 27-year-old ex-international boxer has competed around the world with some of the finest boxers, and is now undefeated after eight fights as a professional (seven wins and one draw). But Williamson says no matter how far he goes in the sport, he never wants to become somebody who believes he knows it all. “I’m always learning and I believe there is always more knowledge that you can gain about something, no matter who you are or what you’ve achieved,” he said.

“Every time I’m in the gym I am learning something new.

“I watch a lot of boxing too. I’m a big fan of the sport in general and when I’m not fighting, I’m always watching fights and studying what others are doing.

“I love watching Anthony Joshua in particular. Not just in the ring but outside it too with his training and the way he conducts himself. He’s a great role model.

“I watch a lot of different styles of fighters too, to see what I can pick up from them and incorporate into my own game. I wouldn’t want to be one dimensional. So I love watching fighters like Oleksandr Usyk and Vasyl Lomachenko too.”

Williamson has reached a point in his career now where he is ready to look towards titles.

On November 24 he’ll have his ninth professional contest, at the Lancastrian Suite in Dunston, against Darryl Sharp. His record reads five wins and 42 defeats and Williamson admits he wants to be fighting better opposition.

He won’t look past the Manchester journeyman, however, recognising that, with eight weeks to prepare, Sharp could cause an upset if he took his eye off the ball.

But Williamson is looking to get back to winning ways having drawn his last fight with fellow undefeated boxer Jack Flatley in Manchester in June.

The Frank Warren-signed fighter said: “I can’t wait to get back out there again because it feels an age since my last one.

“I’m still a little annoyed about that Flatley fight because I truly believe I won that fight and a lot of people I’ve spoken to since have said I won that fight too.”
