Live high life on waterfront

- By Sonia Sharma Reporter sonia.sharma@reachplc.com

FANCY a taste of some waterfront living? Well, a new set of apartments shaping up on the riverside could give you the perfect opportunity.

The Smokehouses are being built at the former Smith’s Dock shipyard, in North Shields, by Places for People and Urban Splash.

The site includes two buildings, which will have 80 apartments and retail units on the ground floors.

Work on their construction started last year and is progressing well, with new facades now installed.

The Smokehouses, designed by architects SimpsonHaugh, will have a mixture of one, two and three-bedroom homes, priced from £125,000, and will be ready early next year.

David Green, partner at SimpsonHaugh, said: “Our aim was to provide a unique residential experience that contributes to the identity of Smith’s Dock.

“Drawing inspiration from the form and scale of the adjacent Brewery Bond Warehouse, the fully glazed gables will offer residents spectacular views across the River Tyne.”

The whole Smith’s Dock site is being transformed under a multimillion-pound project and the Smokehouses are just one part of it.

Also on the development are threestorey townhouses in a section called the Plateau, and 10 homes designed by TV architect George Clarke.

The area will ultimately have around 800 homes, and the riverside will be opened up to provide a direct link between the Fish Quay and Royal Quays.
