BLYTH SPARTANS 4 MARSKE UTD 1

-

Dan Maguire fires home one of his three goals against Marske United yesterday by Green. Marske rallied and got themselves back in the game three minutes before half-time.

Fairley was afforded plenty of space and time on the right to pick out the unmarked Chay Liddle and the midfielder calmly rolled the ball past the advancing Jameson.

The celebrations started in the away end, as the Spartans coaching staff made their frustrations all too evident to their defenders.

But Alun Armstrong and Darren Holloway could take a bit of the sting off their half-time team talk as a Robbie Dale penalty restored their twogoal advantage seconds before the interval.

It was harsh on Marske as Adam Wheatley was penalised for a challenge on Bradley Fewster. The contact was minimal, but referee Andrew Kitchen pointed to the spot.

Dale sent Dean the wrong way and moved himself up to second place in the all-time goalscorers list at Spartans.

Marske looked reinvigorated by their interval pep talk and looked to seize the initiative in the early stages of the second half.

James Fairley had their first chance after the break as he looked to curl a right-foot effort inside Jameson’s farpost but the Spartans stopper managed to get his fingers to the ball and tip it away from goal.

The hosts dropped deep as they looked to absorb their pressure and seemed content to try to hit the EvoStik League East promotion contenders on the break.

Jamie Owens was next to try his luck on 75 minutes as he headed a Curtis Round corner narrowly over the bar at the near post.

Moments later, Fairley managed to beat Jordan Watson on the left before unleashing a rising effort that Jameson spectacularly palmed behind for a corner-kick.

The Seasiders had their best chance to get themselves back in the game with three minutes left on the clock but Adam Wheatley could only send a Gott free-kick over the bar from six yards.

There was a late, cruel blow for Carl Jarrett’s side as Maguire completed his hat-trick in the last minute of the game by tapping home from close range after Dale had hit the far-post with a curling effort.

It provided a deceptive appearance to the scoreline as Marske’s brave performance wasn’t enough to extend their maiden FA Trophy run as it was ended by a ruthless Spartans side.
