FIVE people have been arrested in connection with an ongoing attempted murder investigation.

The arrests have been made after a firearm was allegedly discharged in Newcastle on Friday morning.

It was reported a shot was fired at a white van as the driver waited in traffic lights in the Kingston Park area of Newcastle at around 7.25am.

Nobody was injured during the incident but the driver of the van and witnesses were left shaken, police say.

Officers appealed for information as they tried to trace suspects on yesterday morning.

Now they have confirmed that five people have been arrested in an operation in the west end of Newcastle and they all remain in police custody at this time.

Superintendent Deborah Alderson is continuing to appeal for anyone with information to get in touch.

She said: “We are very concerned by this incident and enquiries are ongoing.

“We have made a number of arrests but we do believe there are still people out there who have information about the incident and are yet to come forward and speak to police.

“There may also be witnesses who heard the shots and saw people acting suspiciously in the area that morning.

“This took place in a very busy area of Newcastle in the middle of a well-used road when lots of people will have been around.

“If you livein the area of the shooting and heard an unusual noise then we would encourage you to get in touch so we can put together the pieces of what has happened.

“If anyone does have information about this incident, or has witnessed the incident on Windsor Way or the Rover being burnt out on South Benwell Road, then we would urge you to do the right thing and contact police.”

Anyone who knows the person responsible, or has information which may assist police, is asked to call Northumbria Police on 101 quoting log 175 22/02/19
