Anderson on the Mark in a vital victory for Spenny

-

MARK Anderson continued his outstanding form by grabbing the only goal of the game in Spennymoor Town’s narrow home win against Leamington.

However, the Moors were grateful for a superb penalty save from goalkeeper Matt Gould which ensured his side claimed all three points and continued its National League North promotion push.

There was little between the two sides in the opening half-hour, only a Glen Taylor header threatening to put the hosts ahead at Brewery Field.

The breakthrough finally arrived on 33 minutes and it should have been SPENNYMOOR LEAMINGTON

predictable Anderson.

Taylor was the creator as he showed his strength to hold off James Mace before setting up Anderson to fire home his third goal in as many games with a cool, side-footed finish.

Rob Ramshaw almost doubled the lead within minutes of Anderson’s opener when he smashed a low drive wide of the far-post.

The visitors started the second half on the front foot.

Only a smart save from close range by Gould prevented Ahmed Obeng from putting the Brakes back on level terms within 60 seconds of the game restarting.

The visitors doubled their efforts to grab an equaliser and were handed the perfect opportunity to do so with 13 minutes left.

Callum Williams illegally brought an end to a run from Dan Sweeney, a challenge which saw the Brakes awarded a penalty.

The usually-reliable Corby Bishop stepped up to the spot kick but his effort was repelled by an outstanding save from Moors’ goalkeeper Gould.

Jason Ainsley’s side saw out the remainder of the game and were given an unexpected boost with the news leaders Chorley had been surprisingly beaten at home by Ashton United.

That combination of results leaves the Moors just a point behind the Magpies - but crucially they hold a game in hand over the Victory Park club.
