Kilty misses his golden opportunity
REIGNING European indoor sprint champion Richard Kilty saw his bid for an unlikely third 60-metre gold falter in Glasgow as he could only finish fourth.
After undergoing Achilles surgery last year, the 29-year-old feared he would be denied the chance to defend the title he first won in Prague in 2015 before retaining two years later in Belgrade when he was overlooked by British Athletics.
But an 11th-hour invite from the European Athletics Council allowed him to take his place on the starting line at the Emirates Arena.
He justified his selection as he progressed through both the heats and the semi-finals, but his recent struggles with form were once again evident as he missed out on a medal by just four one hundredths of a second after clocking 6.66secs.
Slovakia’s Jan Volko crossed the line first to claim Kilty’s crown with a 6.60secs run.
Meanwhile, Chris O’hare claimed Britain’s fifth medal of the championships as he claimed silver in the men’s 3000m final.
The Edinburgh racer produced a brave surge on the final straight to pip Norway’s Henrik Borja Ingebrigtsen into second place.
Ingebrigtsen’s younger brother Jakob had too much power in the last couple of laps to be caught as he surged to gold in a time of seven minutes, 56.15 seconds.
