NORTH East icon Tim Healy is looking forward to the spring/summer as he prepares for another season recording ‘Still Open All Hours’ with David Jason and the team. Tim, plays the role of ‘Gastric’ in the long-running comedy series.

Later this year Tim will also appear on the new 1975 album — the recent Brits 2019 winners — the group that features his son Matty Healy.

Tim said ‘ We are all hugely proud of how well Matty and the boys have done, to see them lifting those awards the other week was simply magic. Last summer Matty asked me If I would record a song that I had penned some years ago.

“He had heard me sing it some years ago when he was a child and he wanted me to perform it on the bands next release.

“I am knocked out to be included on the new album — it was very special to be asked to sing my song and it was very emotional to record it with Matty alongside me during the session. I love my music and those that know me — know that I take little persuading re getting involved in a tune on stage.

“The song is very special to us as family, and I will keep the rest a little secret for now’ said Tim

Before Tim heads out to start recording the new ‘Still Open All Hours’ series this spring, he is set to perform some of his favourite music as part of two very special charity shows in aid of his long time friend David Whittaker.

On Thursday, April 11, Tim will appear at the High Howdon Social Club, Wallsend, and then on Friday April 12 at the Dormans Club in Middlesbrough, for two of his popular ‘An Evening with Tim Healy’ live shows — which are promoted and hosted by the BBC Tees radio host Paul ‘Goffy’ Gough.

“Goffy, asked me to do a few of these shows when I was over in Benidorm and I really love doing them. I get a chance to chat about my life and career on stage with him, sing a few songs along the way, and meet some fantastic people that have supported me down the years.

“They have often watched the telly shows and regularly tell me how particular roles have stayed close to their own personal lives. They also tell me that the shows remind them of family, friends and times shared watching the TV together down the years — that means an awful lot to me.

“We get full houses and people leave with a smile on their faces at the end of the shows.

“I wanted to do them in the social clubs as that is where I started off my journey and I still love them.

“The clubs are facing a tough period around here these days and it’s nice to be on stage and see the rooms packed for the shows we put on.

The two nights in April will have added poignancy for Tim as he will make a donation from proceeds to his dear friend David Whitaker, who he founded Newcastle’s famous Live Theatre Company with in 1973.

North East born actor David was left in need of constant care after a stroke in 2012 and since then Tim has hosted a number of fundraising events in his honour, including an annual celebrity charity golf day in the region which has raised thousands.

Speaking about him, Tim said “David is a brilliant fella, he’s a brilliant actor, and I’m lucky to be in a position to help him with events like the Wallsend and Middlesbrough events next month. Charity is a massive part of my life these days, and the ‘Sunday for Sammy’ concert’s continue to give me a real thrill re the funds we raise for aspiring youngsters in our area.

I am knocked out to be included on the new album — it was very special to be asked to sing my song and it was very emotional to record it.
