New plans for former Chopwell pub are put forward

-

A VILLAGE pub in Gateshead could be transformed into supported accommodation amid anti-social behaviour concerns.

Last orders were called at the Chopwell six years ago, and now Excell Property Developments wants to

Gateshead Council has received 12 objections against the application from residents raising concerns about an increase in anti-social behaviour.

The objectors said there isn’t enough information about the proposed use of the building and who would be living in it.

They also claimed the proposals were “inappropriate” given existing alcohol and drug problems in the area.

The residents claimed flats would put families and businesses off moving to Chopwell and it could have a “negative impact” on the regeneration of the area.

Despite these objections, council planners backed the proposals saying it would bring the empty Derwent Street boozer back into use.

They wrote: “The proposal would bring a vacant site back into use and would contribute to housing stock in the borough.

“It is considered that the development is acceptable in terms of visual and residential amenity, and highway safety and parking.”

The council’s planning committee will vote on the application on Wednesday.
