Chaos off the pitch is not mirrored on it

Cala. The Vanarama National League club, currently the second longest serving in the division, faces an uncertain future.

Varghese has indicated he will stay in control until May 31 – if he gets the bond back.

But what happens if doesn’t?

The League, who imposed a transfer embargo on Gateshead in September, will want guarantees the money will pay off football debts.

There is another separate issue involving the League hanging over the Tynesiders that could potentially see the he club docked points. That would be another slap in the face for the Heed Army faithful, and in particular the players, who have defied the odds this season.

Sunderland contacted the National League regarding outstanding money owed for Luke Molyneux, who spent half a season on loan at Gateshead.

There could be a similar problem with Middlesbrough regarding Luke Armstrong, now at Accrington Stanley, and Aynsley Pears.

Goalkeeper Pears, 20, has been one of the outstanding players for the Heed in a season of over-achievement on the pitch.

It is a mess behind the scenes, with a skeleton squad on the field mirrored in the back-room staff.

Individuals with decades of service have either been forced out of the club or have resigned.

The experiment with foreign ownership has not been successful and Gateshead fans face another summer of turmoil.

The club – one that graced the Football League for 30 years – once again find themselves at the crossroads.

They have hit rock bottom under the current regime, with manager Ben Clark, the players and fans deserving more.

Despite now having a squad of only 16, a defiant Heed somehow remain in the playoff picture.

When the bombshell was delivered late on Friday afternoon, comments from Varghese and Cala were conspicuous by their absence.

There are seven weeks of the season remaining and the clock is ticking for someone to come in and save Gateshead FC.
