Marske may yet make play-offs

-

MARSKE United kept their faint play-off hopes alive with a hard-earned home win against Cleethorpes Town.

The Seasiders made a fast-paced start to the game and went ahead on eight minutes when a high ball into the visitors area caused major issues and Andrew May made the most of the hesitant defending to take home from eight yards.

The lead was a short-lived one as Brody Robertson’s angled drive got the Owls back on level terms within a minute.

But that was the best the MARSKE UNITED CLEETHORPES TOWN visitors could offer as Carl Jarrett’s side regained the lead midway through the first half with a fine volley from Glen Butterworth.

The lead was stretched just before the half-hour mark as James Fairley and Curtis Round combined to give Jamie Owens a simple chance that he did not waste.

The dominance continued 3 1 into the second half as Fairley and Round continued to cause serious problems without really threatening to add to the lead.

That was until the closing stages of the game as Butterworth had a shot blocked, Callum Martin fired over the bar from the edge of the area and Craig Gott curled a delicate effort narrowly over.

The hard work had already been done in the opening half-hour and Marske can reflect on a job well done.

Marske United: Dean, Martin, O’sullivan, Butterworth, May, Wheatley, Fairley, Gott, Liddle (Waters), Owens (Blackford), Round Subs: Carling, Clark, Watson
