continuing to living her life to the full.
She said: “Every time I’ve been diagnosed it has been frightening but I’ll never give up and let this terrible disease beat me or stop me enjoying life.
“My experiences with cancer have definitely made me resilient, more capable of coping with the current pandemic.
“My heart goes out to all those people marooned at home in the current circumstances and affected by cancer, especially those with no close family or friends around them.”
Wanting to give something back, Jackie has shared her experience to healthcare professionals within the cancer community to improve best practice and promote a better understanding of the cancer patient journey.
Jackie has teamed up with her daughter Shannon Penman, Alison Gadomski, Julie Gibson, Debbie Gibson, Cath Harrison and Helen Anderson to raise funds for Macmillian.
Known as the Macmillian Toon Angels, the group of ladies who have all been affected by cancer in some way have raised over £52,000 over the past three years.
They decided to come together and organise a series of fundraising events including family fun days, music nights and parties.
She said: “I’m passionate about helping Macmillan Cancer Support because they are instrumental in providing emotional and financial assistance to people following a cancer diagnosis, which is often a period of greatest need.
“On bad days the Toon Angels are always there for me and each other so we’re luckier than most in terms of our support network.
“The girls in the group have been so supportive and know exactly what to do, either to take my mind off things or be there when I need a shoulder to cry on.
“And it’s lovely that Shannon is part of this too. She was four years old when I had my first diagnosis and it has been tough on her. I truly believe though it has made her more resilient too, more able to deal with life now.”
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Macmillan Toon Angels have postponed events that were due to take place over the coming months.
