Remembering Shearer’s best ever goals for the Magpies

- Joe Donnohue

IT is 14 years since Newcastle United’s record scorer Alan Shearer said goodbye to the black-and-white faithful after a 1-0 final day win over Chelsea.

Shearer – laid up with a knee injury – did not take part in the game, but took to the field following the final whistle in the customary end of season lap of honour. Four days later he would come on to score the decisive penalty in a 3-2 testimonial win over Celtic.

The former England and United captain converted from the spot on plenty of occasions throughout his career, as well as netting a considerable number of excellent strikes. Here are eight of his best goals in a Newcastle United shirt.

VS ASTON VILLA – 3RD NOVEMBER 2001

On a chilly November day, Alan Shearer took it upon himself to embarrass Peter Schmeichel with an outstanding volley. With United already leading 1-0, Rob Lee floated a ball to the far side of the Villa box where Shearer opened his right boot and cushioned a sweet volley into the opposite corner of Schmeichel’s net.

The Dane was left gobsmacked, rooted to the spot as Shearer ditched his notorious one-armed salute for a static two-armed celebration.

VS EVERTON – 1ST DECEMBER

2002

A year later, Shearer went one better with an even sweeter volley, arrowed into Richard Wright’s Everton goal at the Gallowgate End. Shola Ameobi headed a long ball down into Shearer’s

path, who set himself unleashed an outstanding strike.

The power he generated in his finish sent the ball flying into the back of the net. Shearer himself has since described the hit as “one in a hundred.”
