Enjoy a night at the drive-in

-

FILM fans who are missing cinema visits in lockdown could find a perfect stop-gap in plans for a drive-in film tour.

The new initiative – called @Thedrivein – is described as a modern take on the classic drivein cinema experience and it is due to tour to 14 UK cities, including Newcastle, this summer.

With social distancing requirements ruling out traditional cinema visits, film buffs have been missing out on their usual fix of big screen entertainment, but the hope is that the upcoming 12-week tour will bring back some of that movie magic – while sticking to social distance guidelines.

And there will be an extra treat in store for NHS staff and care workers, who will have a chance to bag free tickets once they become available later this May.

At the event, viewers will park their cars – two metres apart – at the chosen location and tune into their car radios to follow the action on some classic and modern films playing out on a topof-the-range LED screen.

Ahead of each screening, the entertainment programme will start with the likes of stand-up comedy, bingo and even silent car discos, while during it viewers will be able to use a food delivery app to order American-style dishes to be served up by waiters on roller skates who – again sticking to social-distancing measures – will deliver their snacks to a special box placed at their car.

The @Thedrivein tour, hosted Mainstage Festivals, is due to run from July 2 – taking in Newcastle from July 23-26 – until September 27. The precise location in Newcastle for the drive-in cinema is yet to be announced.
