Sent Magpies soaring all-conquering style

League under Hughton before falling out with Pardew.

A legal row emerged when Jonas contracted cancer and the player was loaned out to Norwich in 2014.

But Gutierrez recovered fully and won a court case over his treatment by United.

In a dramatic end to his Magpies career he returned to the field and scored the goal that kept the club up in 2015.

Jonas moved to Deportivo La Coruna after Newcastle before playing in Argentina with Independiente and Defensa y Justicia.

He is still playing at 36 with Banfield in Argentina.

Newcastle fans still chant his name at matches to this day.

The Danish star is another who fans have a special place in their hearts for, and the Lovenkrands ditty is a regular on away trips.

His Championship goals were important for United and he scored 16 in 2009/10.

Lovenkrands scored seven times the season after when United were back in the Premier League but was released to join Birmingham in 2012.

The Dane turned 40 this year and is now a coach at Glasgow Rangers.

Then a youngster who was desperate for his big chance, Carroll plundered 19 goals to help fire United to the title.

His reward would be the No 9 shirt after promotion and, after making a great start to life in the Premier League, he was soon called up by England and then made a £35million move to Liverpool.

Carroll did not settle on Merseyside under Brendan Rodgers and was sold to West Ham where he spent six years.

The Geordie striker, 31, is back at United after a free transfer move last summer. He is hoping to get an extension to his current deal which runs out soon.

The former Leeds man made 35 appearances in the Coca-cola Championship but lost his place after the club returned to the Premier League.

After failing to get back in the side under Pardew he was moved to MK Dons before a move to Notts County where the midfielder hung up his boots in 2018.

Now 39, he is not involved in the game at the moment.

The midfielder was injured for a large chunk of the 2009/10 season but played his part in the last few games.

Barton scored United’s first goal back in the Premier League against Aston Villa in a 6-0 win in 2010.

But he left the club to join QPR in 2011 after a fallout with Alan Pardew, just months the year.

Barton’s career would take him to Marseille at one stage too, but he is now manager of Fleetwood Town and has performed wonders at the League One outfit.

The midfielder was club captain in the Championship but made only 18 appearances before retiring.

At 45, he is now a youth coach at Manchester United.

The defender/midfielder made 36 appearances in 2009/10, scoring four times.

After battling back from injuries he stayed at United until 2015 and scored in the Weartyne derby in 2011 in his best moment for the club.

Taylor left on a free transfer in 2015 and played for Hull, Wigan, Port Vale and Fleetwood.

The 35-year-old has his coaching badges and has also been spotted on the punditry circuit.

The Whitley Bay lad got injured midway through the season but picked up a title medal.

Taylor stayed on at Newcastle until 2016 and left after relegation four years ago.

He has since played for Wycombe, Peterborough and Portland Timbers, and is now club captain at Wellington in New Zealand.

The striker started off in great style in the Championship and netted a hat-trick in the home win against Reading. Injuries interrupted his campaign that year and he ended up with 11 goals.

Ameobi stayed on at Newcastle until 2014 before stints at Crystal Palace, Bolton Wanderers, Fleetwood and Notts County.

He has played the role of pundit on Sky Sports, been an ambassador for Coca-cola and is now the club’s loan manager, helping younger players get temporary moves.

The Dutchman only made a handful of appearances in the Championship season but put in a tremendous performance away to West Brom when Steve Harper was injured. Harper played in all but the last game at QPR when Krul was handed a run-out at Loftus Road.

Krul is now at Norwich after leaving United in 2017.

He has also played at Brighton, AZ Alkmaar and Ajax after suffering a knee injury that ultimately ended his career on Tyneside.

Krul has been playing well enough to be talked about for a recall to the Dutch national side this season and was also named in our sister title the Chronicle’s team of the decade.

It would be unfair not to mention the man who took charge of this squad in 2009/10.

He was nobody’s choice to be manager after Alan Shearer left the year before, but after working without complaining as caretaker boss he was quickly handed the job.

Hughton used the dressing room committee to help get the best out of the club and by the end of the season a banner at the Gallowgate End read: “Hughton is a Geordie”.

He was disgracefully sacked by Mike Ashley later in 2010 despite being in a comfortable position in the table and with good wins against Sunderland and Arsenal behind him.

Hughton has since managed Norwich, Brighton and Birmingham and worked as a Sky Sports pundit.

He is currently out of work on the management scene.
