BULLY Kyle Jones attacked his former partner as she lay in bed with her fiveyear-old daughter – with one stray punch striking the terrified youngster.

Jones had already left the woman unconscious, battered and bruised after a previous attack during which he was foaming at the mouth while the child was in the house.

He was released under investigation for that and went on to launch another attack while the woman was cuddling up to her sleeping daughter in the child’s bed.

His violent fury woke the youngster, who saw her mum being attacked and who was then accidentally punched in the ear by the cowardly thug.

Now Jones, who went on to intimidate the woman into retracting her statement to the police, has been jailed at Newcastle Crown Court.

The court heard Jones’ relationship with the woman had turned sour due to his controlling behaviour, including telling her she was not to go out and going through her phone.

In June 2018, the victim was at home with Jones and her friend and her daughter was upstairs with Jones’ young child.

The victim asked Jones to tell his son to stop stomping around, which prompted an angry response and he told her not to tell his son what to do.

Paul Rooney, prosecuting, said: “He then punched the victim two or three times in the face, one punch connecting with her right eye and another with the left.

“The victim fell back, landing partly on the sofa and partly on the floor, lying in the fetal position.”

Jones then lifted his foot as if to kick her but was grabbed in a bear hug by the woman’s friend, who he backhanded across her face.

The friend saw the woman unconscious with blood all over her face and tried to gently rouse her.

Mr Rooney said: “Jones came up, put his face very close to the victim’s and shouted aggressively at her, so much so he was foaming at the mouth.”

The victim was left with two heavily swollen and bruised eyes and a cut below her right eye.

She was too terrified to report him at the time but did in January last year.

He was arrested then released under investigation but went on to attack her again, in May last year.

Jones became angry while looking at Facebook posts by his ex and started to blame his partner, who became afraid and went to sleep in her daughter’s bed.

Jones had her phone, which he would regularly take to check her messages.

In the early hours of the morning he went into the little girl’s room and woke his girlfriend by poking her in the nose and forehead and calling her names while telling her to put the password in the phone while shouting and screaming at her.

Mr Rooney said: “He was so angry and threatening the child was crying and her mum was cuddling her.

“Without warning, the defendant punched the woman in the head.

“He swung a second time and missed her and punched the five-yearold child to the ear.”

Jones then started cuddling them and apologised before smashing the phone against his knee, headbutting it several times then leaving.

The little girl later told the authorities: “My mam’s boyfriend was hitting her but he hit me by accident. He hit me with his fist and it hurt.”

Jones was arrested but was again released under investigation and went on to try to bully her into dropping the allegations.

Mr Rooney said: “He attended her address and told her she better ring the police and drop the charges or there would be consequences.”

He stood over her and made sure she did what he wanted.

Jones, 31, of Rosewood Square, Grindon, Sunderland, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm, two counts of common assault and witness intimidation.

The court heard he has two previous convictions, including for common assault on another former partner.

Judge Julie Clemitson, jailing him for 21 months, said he had a “filthy temper”.

She told him: “You manipulated her into staying with you despite the fact she was terrified of what you had done to her.

“You appear to have very little self control and there is a significant risk to future partners, in my view.”

The judge added that the little girl was “extremely vulnerable, being comforted in her mother’s arms” in her own bed, a place she should have felt safe.”

As well as the prison sentence, he will be subject to a restraining order for three years.

Tony Cornberg, defending, said: “He does feel remorse, he feels genuinely sick to his stomach about what he did, accidentally, to the child.

“He accepts he needs help for his anger and you don’t get that from immediate custody.

“He presents as very low and is regularly teary. He was bullied at school and has insecurities and low selfesteem.”
