DARLINGTON manager Alun Armstrong has continued to strengthen his attacking options after clinching the signing of Dan Maguire.

A number of clubs showed serious interest in signing the striker in the aftermath of his release from York City – but it was the Quakers who won the race for his signature.

Maguire began his career with Northern Alliance club Seaton Delaval, but a surprise move to then-northern Premier

League club Blyth Spartans in the early months of the 2012/13 season saw him develop into a prolific frontman.

Maguire plundered his way to 159 goals in 310 appearances for the Croft Park club as they secured promotion into the National League North under Armstrong in 2017.

He also helped Spartans reach the third round of the FA Cup and was named Northern Premier League Player of the Year during his time at the club. The 27-year-old admitted that he is relishing the challenge of putting an underwhelming year at York behind him as he looks forward to reuniting with his former Spartans boss.

“I had a bit of a stop-start season last year, so I just want to get back to doing what I was doing prior,” explained Maguire.

“Get some goals, play some games and some attacking football.

“I never really set goal targets – as long as the team are playing well and I am playing well, the goals will naturally come.

“It’s a good opportunity, it’s a big club with good fans, obviously I have worked with Alun before.

“I know a lot of the lads and I just thought it’s a good fit.”
