RESIDENTS have relived the horrific scenes that unfolded on their Gateshead street after a man was fatally stabbed.

A 28-year-old man died after being found unconscious on the Leam Lane Estate at around 8pm on Friday.

Police, who have launched a murder investigation, believe he walked into the street and collapsed following an incident inside an address on Chevington.

A spokesperson for the Northumbria force said it is believed the alleged assault followed “a dispute between people who are known to one another”.

Three people have been arrested in connection with the incident and are being questioned by officers.

Now neighbours have described the horrifying aftermath as they woke up yesterday morning to a police cordon and forensics teams scouring the area.

One woman said: “It’s shock

ing. We saw the police cars go past at about 8pm.

“There were still kids playing out in the street.

“They were running along the street saying ‘there’s blood everywhere’.”

A resident near the scene said: “I looked out of the window to see what was going on and I saw the lad in the road. There was someone working on him.”

Another person who lives nearby said: “I saw the ambulance going away and forensics searching around.

“There was quite a few people

crying. It was a sad night.”

At about 8pm on Friday, police received a report that a man had suffered injuries consistent with a stabbing in the Leam Lane Estate.

The 28-year-old man was found unconscious on Chevington with serious injuries.

He was taken to hospital by paramedics but died later that evening despite the efforts of medical staff.

Officers have been carrying out an investigation throughout the night and three people have now been arrested in connection with the incident. Specialist officers are supporting the victim’s next of kin.

Senior investigating officer Detective Inspector Graeme Dodds said a cordon would remain in place throughout yesterday.

He said: “This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the family of the man who has lost his life as a result of this suspected assault.

“We are treating this as a murder and believe the incident has taken place inside a nearby address following a dispute

between people who are known to one another.

“The victim is then thought to have walked into the street where he has collapsed.

“Three people, who are all known to the victim, are currently in police custody and are being questioned in relation to the incident.”

He added: “A cordon will remain in place today to allow us to carry out forensic enquiries in the area.

“We do not believe there is any wider risk to the public but officers are on patrol to carry out enquiries and offer re-assurance to any concerned residents.

“The victim’s family are obviously devastated and we would ask that the public respect their privacy at this difficult time.”

Anyone who has information about the suspected assault is asked to contact police on 101 quoting log 1097 11/09/20.
