Platt stops Cambridge’s move to top

-

CAMBRIDGE missed the chance to move top of League Two as Matt Platt struck six minutes into stoppage time to earn Barrow a 1-1 draw at Abbey Stadium.

David Dunn’s side had bossed the first half and twice hit the woodwork before being gifted the lead nine minutes after the break.

Barrow goalkeeper Joel Dixon, under pressure from Paul Mullin, passed the ball straight to Joe Ironside, who fired into an empty net from the edge of the box for his fourth goal in as many games.

Bradley Barry almost levelled with a drive which Harry Darling headed off the line, only for Platt to snatch a point at the end.

Cheltenham climbed into third, three points behind leaders Newport, after winning 2-1 at Carlisle.

William Boyle put Cheltenham ahead in the 15th minute and Conor Thomas notched a second from the penalty spot nine minutes before the break after Jon Mellish fouled Ben Tozer.

Mellish redeemed himself by pulling a goal back in first-half stoppage time.

Mansfield finally claimed their first League Two win of the season at the 12th attempt as they triumphed 2-1 at Forest Green.

After knocking Sunderland out of the FA Cup last week in front of watching new manager Nigel Clough, the Stags won 2-1 at Scunthorpe in the former England international’s first game in charge on Tuesday night.

On-loan George Lapslie, who struck the winner at the Stadium of Light, netted for the third time in as many games to put Mansfield ahead in the sixth minute before Harry Charsley added a second 10 minutes before half-time.

Rovers were given a lifeline when Odin Bailey stabbed home for Rovers with five minutes to go – but Clough’s side held out.

Managerless Tranmere scored twice in stoppage time to secure a dramatic 4-3 victory at 10-man Port Vale.

The Valiants were cruising at 2-0 ahead courtesy of Tom Conlon’s penalty and David Amoo’s strike before they had Luke Joyce sent off seven minutes into the second half.

James Vaughan reduced the deficit and then levelled from the spot before Devante Rodney restored Vale’s lead with 15 minutes remaining.

However, Kaiyne Woolery made it 3-3 in the third minute of time added on before Kieron Morris won it when his effort found the top corner.

Exeter remain fourth after a 2-2 draw with Bradford at Valley Parade, with all the goals in the first half.

Scunthorpe snapped a run of eight successive defeats in all competitions as they beat Oldham 2-0 at Boundary Park.

Southend remain bottom of the table but claimed their first victory of the season as Emile Acquah’s 88th-minute goal earned them a 1-0 victory at Walsall.
