Three taken to hospital after crash

THREE people were taken to hospital after a “horrific” collision on the A19.

The crash involving two cars happened at about 10.20am yesterday at the Hutton Henry turn-off in County Durham.

The A19 northbound carriageway was then closed to traffic between the A179 at the Sheraton junction and the A181 Castle Eden Interchange until just before noon.

Great North Air Ambulance Service attended the scene and the casualties were taken to hospital.

A police officer at the scene said: “Fortunately no one was seriously injured.”

People on social media who had witnessed the crash or the aftermath described the scene as “horrific”.

And many called for the gap in the central reservation to be closed off amid safety concerns.
