Heed rack up more points with a big win

- BY JEFF BOWRON

GATESHEAD made it 13 points from their last five games with a big win at promotion rivals Chester.

The Heed struck early and late at the Deva Stadium to move up to fifth in Vanarama National League North.

Mike Williamson’s men enjoyed two thirds possession in an impressive first half display.

Jordan Preston scored on 13 minutes but a merited second goal proved to be elusive.

Simon Grand’s header early in the second half levelled things up and set up a closer fought second period.

Super sub Macaulay Langstaff’s 86th minute winner, however, ensured the Heed remain upwardly mobile.

Unlike the first half against leaders Gloucester in midweek Gateshead were able to play the ball out from the back in the opening 45 minutes.

Wing-backs Kal Griffiths and George Smith provided width and got forward to good effect as the Tynesiders passed their hosts off the park.

For the fifth game running Gateshead, unchanged, drew first blood – this time from a throw-in.

Smith’s throw saw Preston roll Paddy Lacey to beat Louis Gray in the Seals goal at his near post.

It was a powerful 17-yard strike from Preston with Smith then testing Gray with another well-struck effort.

George Glendon’s long distance drive was tipped over by Harrison Male, Lacey then with a shot blocked near the line.

These, however, were rare threats from Chester, who were outplayed in the first half by a slick Gateshead.
