Firefighters battle for six hours at home blaze
FIREFIGHTERS spent more than six hours at the scene of a huge blaze which ripped through a Northumberland home.
Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service were called to Marlow Street in Blyth at around 8.30pm on Friday with crews working tirelessly through the night to bring the blaze under control.
Six appliances were initially dispatched to the scene and they were joined by the aerial ladder platform.
Marlow Street and a section of the A193 were cordoned off as crews fought the flames coming from the terraced home.
Firefighters tackled the blaze for hours from above the burning building and at ground level with the property’s roof collapsing as a result of the incident.
There were no occupants in the house at the time of the fire with no injuries reported. Firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze and left the scene at around 2.45am.
A Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said an investigation is now under way to determine the cause of the fire.
Yesterday, firefighters tackled a large blaze at a County Durham country park. A large plume of smoke could be seen above Chester-le-street as fire crews battled a blaze on the Waldridge Fell.
County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service sent four appliances to the scene along with a Tactical Response Vehicle.
A spokeswoman for the fire service said: “We received our first call at 10.57am and took 32 calls about it.
“We sent one crew from Durham, two from High Hold and one from
Consett, along with a TRV from Consett.”
The spokeswoman said it was a large fire.
She added: “I think the problem is the wind has helped spread it further.”
Tracie Oliver, who took a photograph of the blaze from her home on Quantock Avenue, said: “It is really upsetting to see smoke again as it is just a few years since the last fire up there.
“All of the wildlife and plants would be recovering from that one.”
