Roof destroyed in large fire

THE roof of a former community centre in Walker was destroyed after a large fire borke out yesterday

Emergency services attended the fire on Allendale Road in Walker yesterday morning .

Both Northumbri­a Police and Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service were called out, with police closing off the road as the incident was dealt with.

Neighbours and passers-by were urged to avoid the area while the fire was tackled with six fire engines on the scene.

Footage from the scene showed a police guarding a cordon as firefighte­rs dealt with the scene.

A spokespers­on for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said yesterday: “The fire service are in attendance at a large incident on Allendale Road, Walker in Newcastle-upon-tyne.

“Six pumping appliances in attendance with a number of special appliances also. Avoid the area if at all possible.”

Plumes of smoke could be seen filling the air as parts of the road were closed off from the public.

A local resident who did not want to be named described the scene and said: “I saw the smoke at about 7am while watering my garden.

“I watched it for 30 seconds or so to see where it looked like it was coming from then I went back inside to grab a phone and called the fire brigade.

“The smoke was getting worse and the appliance pulled up as I was calling.”

Northumbri­a Police and Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service have both been approached for more details.
