Farringdon fall short of place in cup semi-final

-

FARRINGDON Detached narrowly missed out on a place in the semi-final of the Alan Hood Charity Cup after they claimed a 3-1 win at FC Hartlepool.

Liam Lay’s side needed a comprehensive win at Grayfields to secure a top two place in group two – but their twogoal margin meant they fell just shy of leapfrogging Norton and Stockton Ancients.

All was going to plan for Farringdon as Rob Thompson continued his impressive run of form with two first-half goals to put his side in control.

Hartlepool pulled a goal back five minutes after the restart with a Luke Naylor penalty – but their visitors restored their two-goal advantage thanks to a header from Karl Southern and that was enough to give them all three points.

However, it was not enough to secure a top two place and they miss out on a semi-final spot by just two goals.

Richmond Town came out on top in the final fixture to take place in group one.

The North Yorkshire outfit travelled to Nissan Sports Complex to face Washington United in a meeting of two sides unable to reach the semi-final of the competition. The visitors took a two-goal lead into half-time after a dominant first-half display was rewarded when Thomas Kavanagh found the net twice before the interval.

A late Lewis Charlton penalty gave United some hope of battling back to secure a point – but they were unable to find an equaliser and ended their first season as a Wearside League club with a defeat.

The semi-final of the competition will take place next weekend as Chester-le-street United host Norton & Stockton Ancients and Boldon CA travel to Gateshead Leam Rangers.
