- By Eden Lewis Reporter eden.lewis@reachplc.com

RESIDENTS on a Stockton street woke to a police cordon after a BMW hurtled over garden fences and burst into flames on Friday evening.

The incident happened just after 7.30pm on Friday at the top of Dunmail Road, two men were injured, with one being taken to hospital for facial injuries.

Residents on the street were reluctant to speak of what they witnessed, but some revealed loud noises and suspected fighting as the incident unfolded on their street.

One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “I was in the house with my sister-in-law and we heard a loud noise, we came out the house and saw the car parked at the top over some fences.

“They were revving the car over and over again and the next thing I saw was it on fire shortly after.”

Another resident claimed they saw a number of men reportedly fighting, but couldn’t confirm the number of individuals as they were a distance from the unfolding scene.

Forensic experts, police, fire crews and paramedics attended Friday night’s incident in Stockton, extinguishing the flames in an unoccupied vehicle.

Officers from Cleveland Police have cordoned off the top of Dunmail Road where the burned-out BMW remains in a front garden, with forensic teams also at the scene on yesterday morning.

Another local on Dunmail Street said: “I looked outside and saw that the police had cordoned off the top of the street and the car had been on fire.”

Cleveland Police are now appealing for dash-cam footage of the car in the moments leading up to the incident.

If you can help the inquiry contact police on 101, quoting the reference number 32497.

A resident adjacent to the police cordon, who also wished to be anonymous, spoke about what she witnessed.

She explained: “I saw a bunch of lads drive up the road and go to kick the door down on a house. I think I saw some fighting and then they got onto the garden to get out – they got stuck, the car set on fire and they all ran away.

“My car got burned-out three weeks ago for absolutely no reason at all so I really don’t know what’s going on up here.”

Another resident added: “I was out all night and got home when it was all kicking off. I saw police tape off the area and the paramedics on the scene too.”

Police have asked any witnesses to pass on information via 101 or anonymously at Crimestoppers online at www. crimestoppers-uk.org or by phoning 0800 555111.
