Stage is set for theatre company’s debut show

MUSICAL SUFFERED SETBACKS DUE TO LOCKDOWN

- By Eden Lewis Reporter

A NEWLY set up musical theatre company is set to take to the stage in their debut show, after months of Covid setbacks.

The Musical Theatre Collective was set up by Middlesbrough-based dance teachers Alice Maenami and Chelsea Walker, who have had a passion for dance their whole life.

The show was originally planned for August but now the company can take to the stage with their production of Broadway’s A Chorus Line.

As the 2021 lockdown neared an end, Chelsea and Alice decided to join forces and open their musical theatre company which caters for everyone from children right up to adults.

Alice said: “We started afresh after lockdown on April 12 and we run both dance classes and we also got the rights to perform A Chorus Line, which we’ll be performing at Middlesbrough Theatre next week.

“Plans for our first musical have been going on for a year, our original date for the show was August but due to restrictions we unfortunately had to postpone. Lucky for us the theatre had some dates which we snapped up straight away!”

Now their debut musical is on the horizon, there is an air of relief around The Musical Theatre Collective as they’re finally able to take their 15 strong cast on stage to perform A Chorus Line – a musical based on auditions for a Broadway production.

Alice added: “We have our older students performing in A Chorus Line due to some of the themes in the show but the younger ones have been so supportive with the show, myself and Chelsea are also in the show. As experienced dance teachers, the theme of the show is the perfect one for us to start off with.

“I’ve personally never felt more relieved to get the show finally on the stage, we’ve had so many setbacks and I can’t wait to see it finally come to fruition. We’re desperate to get into the theatre and get it done!”

The shows are finally taking place on Wednesday, March 9, Thursday, March 10, and Friday, March 11.

Tickets for The Musical Theatre Collective’s performance of A Chorus Line is on sale from Middlesbrough Theatre’s website.
