‘Grab bags’ initiative for victims of abuse
FREE ESSENTIAL ITEMS
SPECIAL “grab bags” containing essential everyday items such as clothing and hygiene products are being offered to women fleeing exploitation to help them break free from the cycle of abuse.
Northumbria Police’s Multi Agency Exploitation Hub has joined forces with a number of partner organisations to help women and children fleeing all forms of exploitation, including modern slavery, human trafficking, abusive relationships and county lines.
Most women caught in such coercive situations flee with only the clothes on their back and have no access to money.
But the grab bags, provided by the Soroptimists based in Newcastle, South Tyneside and North Tyneside, are being given to victims who have come forward to police after leaving their homes without any belongings.
Items in the bags include clothing, make-up, hygiene products and a purse. All are new and have been bought from funds raised or donated, helping victims take that initial step knowing they have support waiting for them.
Northumbria Police officers often work in conjunction with the local authorities, Soroptimist Groups, nongovernmental organisations and The Salvation Army to provide help and support to vulnerable women.
Detective Chief Inspector Sharon Chatterton, from Northumbria Police’s Multi Agency Exploitation Hub, said: “The grab bags, which are donated to us, contain all of the essentials that someone will need until secure and safe accommodation and other financial support is acquired for them.
“Often these people flee in the middle of the night and it can make it difficult to access immediate support - this is where we come in.
“Speaking to these women and hearing their journeys you quickly understand the fear and pressure they felt to stay within the realm of their exploitation.
“Their bravery is inspiring. I want other women in these situations to hear us when we say that we’re here ready to help and your safety, dignity and welfare is our top priority.”
