Marske’s title hopes take a hit from Hebburn’s last-gasp goal

- Josh Youll

HEBBURN forward Olly Martin put a dent in Marske United’s title hopes by netting a late leveller to deprieve the hosts of precious points.

Adam Boyes added to his incredible goal tally to put United in front but it was not enough at Mount Pleasant.

Seasiders captain Glen Butterworth created his side’s first chance from a corner but defender Kevin Burgess nodded over when wellplaced.

Butterworth pulled the strings again on 15 minutes by driving an effort past the post from 25 yards after he got on the end of a throw-in. The midfielder then neatly brought down Curtis Round’s high cross before slicing a shot wide from the edge of the box.

Marske shot-stopper Ryan Catterick was yet to be challenged by the visitors, however Oliver Walters was tripped in a great position by Andrew May on the 26 mark.

Michael Richardson stepped up for Hebburn but the midfielder’s setpiece skimmed the crossbar.

Marske’s golden opportunity came three minutes later as Butterworth’s corner found Burgess, who nodded towards the bottom corner but Mark Foden swatted away brilliantly.

Within the first knockings of the second period, Stephen Thompson collected possession and the Spennymoor loanee hooked an effort off target.

Dangerman Boyes broke the deadlock with 53 on the clock. Thompson played winger Connor Smith on the right, driving a cross into Boyes at close-range for an easy tap in.

The Seasiders were poached in first place as it stood, and tried to get a second before the hour as Wheatley smashed towards Foden.

Playing a counter-attacking system, Hebburn’s first shot on target came on 70 minutes as Tom Potter finessed towards the top left but Catterick superbly clawed away.

Richardson’s appeals for a penalty were waved away, while Martin later headed Damen Mullen’s cross into the arms of the goalkeeper.

As the full-time whistle was in sight, Liam O’sullivan lunged in on Richardson and referee Mark Bell blew up.

Hebburn frontman Martin dispatched with ease into the bottom corner as nearly 500 watched on.
