Magpies trio in talks with club to extend deals

YOUNG GUNS ALSO WAITING FOR NEWS ON FUTURES

- Lee Ryder

FABIAN Schar, Sean Longstaff and Paul Dummett are in talks with Newcastle United with a view to extending their respective deals.

The trio are all in the final months of their contracts and would be free to leave in the summer if new terms are not agreed.

Head coach Eddie Howe has admitted ‘a couple’ of players are negotiating with the club, with homegrown duo Dummett and Longstaff both having been in talks for some time.

Switzerland international Schar has went from outcast to first-team regular under Howe and could also extend his stay on Tyneside.

Dummett and Schar’s deals were renewed for a year last summer but Longstaff has not had a new contract since the Rafa Benitez era.

It’s not just first-team players who are waiting to see what the future holds, with a slew of academy aces also hoping for new contracts.

That includes a trio that have been on the fringes of the senior squad in recent years, namely winger Thomas Allan, defender Ryan Barrett and midfielder Jack Young.

Newcastle have not released their retained list yet and Under-23s coach Elliot Dickman is working closely with academy chief Steve Harper on deciding who will stay.

Harper and his staff will help any released players find new clubs. Newcastle are also running the rule over Aston Villa’s teenage winger Tristan Goodridge, who is set to leave the Midlands club this summer.

The versatile 19-yearold has spent time at United’s academy this month and played the first half of Friday’s derby defeat at Middlesbrough.

Goodridge has scored four goals and provided three assists in 17 matches this season, and notched in the Papa Johns Trophy for Villa in a 4-2 defeat at Burton.

Meanwhile, Newcastle will have Spanish giants Barcelona for company if they decide to pursue Antonio Rudiger this summer.

The powerful Germany international’s deal is up at the end of the season and the ownership chaos at Stamford Bridge has created uncertainty for some of their soon-to-be free agents.

Thomas Tuchel would love to extend the centre-back’s deal – and still believes there is a good chance the 29-year-old will stay – but with owner Roman Abramovich still yet to sell the club after having his assets frozen by the UK Government, there have been rumours of an exodus.
