A BORO sports presenter has joined forces with a North East cancer charity for a 10k fundraising run.

Kay Murray, a studio host of ESPN’S football coverage in the USA, started her broadcasting career at Boro TV and is still passionate about her hometown club.

Despite living thousands of miles away, Kay is putting on her beloved Boro shirt for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation run to support the charity that’s “very close to her heart.”

As top-flight footballers run 10k on average each game, the foundation, which is a part of Newcastle Hospitals Charity, has challenged people to also run the same distance to raise money for cancer trials and cancer care.

People are asked to ‘run a match’ or even ‘half a match’ across the month of April.

This charity is very close to Kay’s heart, as her family have been affected by cancer.

Her dad, Dave Murray, sadly passed away in 2014 after receiving care from the Sir Bobby Robson Centre.

“My dad received treatment at the Sir Bobby Robson Centre and I know how important the work

there is for cancer patients, both now and for the future,” said Kay.

“The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation means everything to me because it gave my dad hope and some happiness in his final days.

“The work they do is vital and it’s something the whole Northeast benefits from and can take pride in.

“I’m really happy to have this chance to show my support by doing Sir Bobby’s football run.

“It’s a win-win for me because it raises money for a charity that’s very close to my heart and it’s also helping me get back into running longer distances again.

“I’m really looking forward to getting my trainers and Boro top on and doing my 10k right here in Connecticut.”

The foundation was launched by Sir Bobby in 2008 to find more effective ways to detect and treat cancer.

Directly benefitting cancer patients from across the North East and Cumbria, the foundation’s cancer trials research centre is at the heart of the work it supports.

The run is free to enter, with runners asked to try to raise £50 in sponsorship.
