LEAGUE DIV ONE

NORTH Shields now need just one point from their remaining four games to be confirmed as Northern League champions after a dramatic turn of events yesterday.

The Robins played their part as they continued their impressive away record with a 1-0 win at Redcar Athletic thanks to a second-half goal from Regan Paterson.

And an impressive travelling support were given further cheer as news filtered through to confirm a Dale Hopson goal had given Northallerton Town a 1-0 win at title rivals Consett.

The results now mean Marc Nash’s men will be confirmed as Division One champions for only the second time in their history if they avoid defeat at Newton Aycliffe on Tuesday night.

Thornaby remain in third place as Jamie Davis got the only goal of the game in their win at Ashington and fourth-placed Ryhope CW made the most of an impressive first-half display to take the honours against Newcastle Benfield.

James Ellis, Chris Wallace and Chris Trewick put the hosts in control at half-time and they collected the points despite Ryan Mcgorrigan giving Benfield some hope when he scored nine minutes into the second half.

Whickham’s positive end to the campaign continued as Zak Atkinson’s brace and a Scott Robson goal gave them a 3-0 home win against Guisborough Town.

Whitley Bay earned a muchneeded home win as Adam Shanks and Lewis Orrell scored to see off Sunderland RCA at Hillheads.

Daniel Sayer got the only goal of Seaham Red Star’s win at Bishop Auckland and West Allotment and Newton Aycliffe shared the spoils at East Palmersville Sports Complex.

Callum Larmouth put the hosts ahead on 65 minutes but Jake Petitjean scored late on to earn a point for the visitors.

A hat-trick from on-loan Gateshead youngster Eddie Thomas helped Crook Town to a 3-1 win at already relegated Billingham Town.

Lexus Beeden grabbed what could only be classed as a consolation for the hosts.
