A DEVOTED family have paid a heartfelt tribute to a North East ice cream legend who has died.

Michael Minchella, co-owner of Minchella & Co South Shields, died peacefully at home, with his wife Anne by his side, after a brave battle with chronic kidney disease.

A statement on the business’s Facebook page said the grandfather made the tough decision to withdraw from treatment for the disease in order to spend more quality time with his friends and family.

The statement continued: “Michael was a proud family man, recognising all the achievements of his wider family both past and present. Michael wholeheartedly loved his wife Anne, who has been an incredible support to him, particularly in his later life.

“He was also a proud father to son Joe and his partner Jade and loving Nonno to his grandson Federico. He would remind them of how much he loved them every day.

“We shall remember Michael as always being on hand to support and help those who needed it. He truly was one of the wisest and funniest, always having the right thing to say at the right time. Michael had a big heart, the ripples of his love, kindness and generosity will be felt for generations to come.

“We believe that ice cream is created to give people moments of happiness. This ethos transferred to all parts of Michael’s life, touching the hearts of many people in local community and beyond.”

Mr Minchella – whose favourite flavour out of the hundreds he made was vanilla – was a stalwart of the Ice Cream Alliance, serving as president between 1990 and 1991 and a regular fixture on the board.

He also won many accolades in the National Ice Cream Competition, including National Ice Cream Champion in 2018.

The family added: “We would like to thank everyone who has supported Michael through his later life, and we thank all those who have continued to support us after his passing.”

Mr Minchella’s son, Joe, also wrote: “Dad, you have left me with so much love and happy memories. I couldn’t have been prouder of you.

“Thank you for everything you have done for me and my friends and family. You will live in my heart forever.”
