GRAHAM Fenton remains unbeaten as Blyth Spartans manager after a late brace from Alex Nicholson gave his side a dramatic win at Buxton.

The former South Shields boss knows all about the challenge provided at Silverlands after coming up against the Bucks on several occasions while at the 1st Cloud Arena.

And it was one familiar face that put the hosts ahead three minutes before half-time as ex-mariners striker Jason Gilchrist rose at the back post to head beyond Blyth keeper Alex Mitchell.

The hosts continued to pressure Fenton’s men after half-time with Sean Newton, Jake Moult and Levi Andoh all trying their luck without success.

Spartans remained in the game and starting to push forwards in search of an equaliser as the final 20 minutes of the game approached.

Substitute Jordan Hickey was unfortunate to see a low drive sneak beyond the far post – but the opportunity did send belief coursing through the Spartans faithful.

Their patience paid off when an equaliser arrived with just three minutes remaining as Nicholson stole the limelight and the points for his side.

A long ball caused issues for the home defence and Nicholson pounced on a loose ball 10 yards out, crashing an unstoppable effort beyond goalkeeper Theo Richardson.

The former South Shields full-back was not done yet. A foul on the lively Hickey saw Spartans awarded a penalty in injury time.

Nicholson kept his cool to beat Richardson for a second time in quick succession and send the travelling support into raptures.

They will hope to continue their fine start under Fenton when Scarborough Athletic visit Croft Park tomorrow afternoon.
