Ashton all Dun in after shock defeat

-

DUNSTON UTS pulled off a major shock as they sent Northern Premier League Premier Division side Ashton United out of the FA Trophy.

The Robins have already suffered cup heartache at the hands of a

North East club after Ashington sent them tumbling out of the FA Cup last month.

Dunston matched their former Northern League rivals with a 3-1 penalty shoot-out win after the two sides failed to break the deadlock over 90 minutes at Hurst Cross.

Marske United also needed a penalty shoot-out to secure their place in Monday’s first round draw after they survived a scare at

Clitheroe. Goals from home duo Max Cane and Reece Webb-foster came either side of efforts from Connor Smith and Adam Boyes as the tie was forced into the lottery of a shoot-out.

Marske, though, held their nerve with a 4-1 win on penalties to ensure they progressed after a tough test in the North West.

Young duo Sam Hodgson and Joao Gomes were on target as South Shields kept alive their hopes of a run in the competition with a 2-1 victory at Stalybridge Celtic.

A late Osebi Abadaki penalty set

Mariners’ nerves on edge but Kevin Phillips’ men held on to claim a hardearned success.

Morpeth Town were unable to join their North East rivals in tomorrow’s draw as a Nico Evangelinos hat-trick inspired Lancaster City to a 3-2 result at Craik Park.

Dale Pearson put Morpeth ahead from the penalty spot with just four minutes on the clock but Evangelinos’ treble was enough to send the Dolly Blues through.

Pearson doubled his tally with just over 20 minutes remaining but his side fell short as they pressed forwards in search of an equaliser.
