Benfield ease into second round draw

-

COLIN Stromsoy celebrated a win over his former club as Newcastle Benfield sent Northern League Division One rivals Newton

Aycliffe out of the FA Vase. Dennis Knight and Ben Dibb-fuller both scored twice as Stromsoy’s side eased to a 4-0 win at Sam Smith’s Park and sent themselves into tomorrow’s second round draw.

They’ll be joined in the hat by Horden CW after Jonny Payne’s side claimed a 3-0 home win against Armthorpe Welfare thanks to a Liam Wright brace and a David Doughty strike.

Thornaby also secured progress but only after they came through a penalty shoot-out in their home tie with Pilkington. Alex Hutchinson and Steven Roberts netted for the Teesside outfit but they were pegged back by a brace from Bruno De Almeida Severino. The game went to penalties and it was the hosts that held their nerve with a 5-4 win in the shoot-out.

However, the rest of the Vase results do not make for good reading for Northern League clubs after several saw their hopes of a run ended by defeats.

Morgan Dart’s goal was not enough for Seaham Red Star as they fell to a 2-1 home loss against Eccleshill United and 1981 winners Whickham were beaten 3-1 at Holker Old Boys.

Timmy Browne and Alex Christie both scored for Newcastle University as a Brett Agnew hat-trick inspired Hallam to a 5-2 win over the Division Two side.

Andrew Nelson put Billingham Town ahead in the opening minute of their home tie with Isle of Man but it was the visitors that progressed thanks to two goals from Ciaran Mcnulty and one apiece from Karl Clark and Charlie Higgins.

Adam Storey and Matty Moffat goals were not rewarded as Brandon United suffered a 3-2 home defeat against Thackley.
