Archer is on target at Boro but boss

MICHAEL Carrick is not yet sure whether Aston Villa will be willing to allow Cameron Archer to rejoin Middlesbrough next season, but certainly hasn’t ruled out the possibility.

Archer has had a fantastic spell on Teesside since joining on loan in January, helping Boro reach the Championship play-offs with nine goals and six assists so far. It’s form that has earned the praise of many and left Boro fans desperate to see him return to the Riverside next season.

Villa boss Unai Emery hasn’t ruled out the possibility either, admitting that while delighted to see him doing well on Teesside, a decision on his immediate future is yet to be made. While Villa seem unlikely to sell given how much promise the 21-year-old shows, another loan move could be in the offing if Villa decide he still isn’t quite ready for a breakthrough there yet.

Many have suggested that for another loan move to be a possibility though, Boro would have to be successful in the play-offs, with promotion to the Premier League surely the only hope of getting him back to the Riverside next season.

But asked that exact question, Carrick said: “I don’t know. At this moment in time I’m not sure. It’s never straightforward anyway, especially with younger players at that age. Loans, permanents, leagues, there’s a lot to fall into place, we’ll just have to assess that as and when we get to the summer.”

While Boro would almost certainly love to have Archer back next season, their immediate aim and focus is on the remainder of the season. They
