CONSETT audiences will be in the presence of a soap icon this Christmas, with Coronation Street legend Kevin Kennedy signing up to perform in pantomime.

After appearing as Norman ‘Curly’ Watts in Corrie for the first time in the 80s, Kevin quickly became one of the most recognisable faces on the ITV show, becoming involved in huge storylines, not least his romance with Rovers Return barmaid Raquel played by Happy Valley actress Sarah Lancashire, as she struggled with her feelings for both him and love rival Des Barnes.

After character Curly left for a new life in Newcastle with Geordie copper wife Emma back on 2003, Kevin has since carved out a successful career in theatre, starring in hit musicals like We Will Rock You and Rock of Ages.

And this November he’ll be making the switch from the cobbles of Wetherfield and the wings of West End stages to tread the boards in Consett Empire’s panto production of Cinderella, as His Royal Highness, Kin Curlington. And he’s not the only well-known TV personality in the show, as Benidorm star, ex I’m A Celebrity camper and comedian Crissy Rock is also in the cast.

Writer and director Leah Bell, responsible for the huge success of last year’s pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk, will also appear on stage as Fairy Godmother.

Cinderella will run from Friday, November 29, until Tuesday, December 31, with tickets already on sale.
