A1 crash horror

A MAN suffered serious head injuries after a metal object smashed through his windscreen while he was driving on the A1.

The 61-year-old was travelling on the southbound carriageway at Fawdon in Newcastle at around 10.04am on Friday when he was injured.

It is understood a metal object has fell from a moving vehicle and went through the windscreen of his van.

The driver of the silver Citroen Berlingo was taken to hospital with serious head injuries.

One lane of the southbound carriageway was blocked for around one hour.

Police said: “Police are now urging anyone who saw what happened in the moments leading up to the collision, particularly passing vehicles with any dash cam footage, to get in touch so they can determine what has happened. Officers would also like to speak to drivers of any vehicles carrying metal in the area at the time.
