Big Al gives verdict on Toon’s new goal hero

Sunday Sun - - Football -

NEWCASTLE United’s record goalscorer Alan Shearer was full of praise for the club’s latest number nine after Salomon Rondon’s double secured three points against Bournemouth.

The on-loan forward gave United a two-nil lead after poking home from close range, Asmir Begovic having saved his first effort.

But it was Rondon’s second goal, a bullet header from a superb Kenedy cross which caught the eye of Shearer.

Tweeting after the final whistle, he wrote: ‘Yes big man, Salomon Rondon! What a performance, loved that second goal – a brilliant three points.’

Bournemouth scored in the sixth minute of first-half stoppage time as Jefferson Lerma headed home, but United held on for their second win in a week.

Rondon was praised for his defensive work, as well as his attack performance – and very nearly got a hat-trick when he forced Begovic into a save late on.

Speaking after the game, he said: “We needed this, to be honest, this is the way we need to keep working and fighting. You can see the level tonight, so we need to keep playing like that to stay up.”

Newcastle are up to 14th in the table and head to Burnley two weeks tomorrow.
