them pay. The black-and-whites lost the ball in the middle of the pitch as Declan Rice hooked a ball forward for Arnautovic to flick on.

He found Hernandez down the right and he sprinted through before calmly dispatching a low shot past Dubravka.

Moments later, Dubravka saved well from Felipe Anderson as the visitors tried to kill the game off.

Benitez made his second change with 20 minutes to go as Jonjo Shelvey replaced Kenedy.

With 69 minutes played, his fellow sub Atsu struck a shot from 25 yards but Fabianski gathered easily.

Rondon earned a free-kick right outside the box with 13 minutes left but Shelvey’s effort flew high over the bar as the afternoon’s misery continued. There was another opportunity for Rondon three minutes later but his angled shot from Atsu’s cross was again saved by the West Ham stopper. Atsu buzzed around the penalty area before firing in an 83rd-minute shot but again the Polish international was equal to it. It would get even worse for Newcastle in stoppage time as Anderson rampaged down the left before slipping past Schar before rifling the ball beneath the goalkeeper to make it an even more impressive scoreline. If anybody needed a reminder that the much maligned Magpies are still in a relegation battle, this was certainly it. A tough trip to another side who aren’t scared to spend money awaits next at Everton.
