Cash­point ripped out by thieves

THE front of a shop has been ripped out by thieves as they made off with a cash machine.

A stolen dumper truck was used to smash into the wall of the McColl’s shop in New­big­gin-bythe-Sea in Northum­ber­land on Satur­day.

The in­side of the shop has been left ex­posed and de­bris was scat­tered across the street.

Tyre marks from the dumper truck can also be seen on the road head­ing straight for the shop front.

The shock­ing scenes of de­struc­tion stunned passers by on Satur­day morn­ing af­ter the crim­i­nals struck in the early hours.

Po­lice are now hunt­ing the thieves who man­aged to get away with a cash machine.

It is thought they stole the truck from Ash­ing­ton and it was later found by po­lice af­ter be­ing used in the ram-raid.

A Northum­bria Po­lice spokesman said: “We are in­ves­ti­gat­ing the theft of a cash machine from the McColl’s shop on Cleve­land Ter­race, New­big­gin. Ram-raid at McColl’s in New­big­gin-by-the-Sea

“In the early hours of this morn­ing, po­lice re­ceived a re­port that a dumper truck had been driven into the shop and an ATM was sub­se­quently taken.

“The truck, which po­lice be­lieve to have been stolen from the Wood­horn Lane area of Ash­ing­ton, was later re­cov­ered but the oc­cu­pants had made off.

“An in­ves­ti­ga­tion is un­der way to lo­cate those re­spon­si­ble. Any­one with in­for­ma­tion is asked to con­tact po­lice on 101 quot­ing ref­er­ence 54 081218 or Crimestop­pers anony­mously on 0800 555 111.”
