Derby clash draw for youngsters
NEWCASTLE United have been handed a powder keg draw in the Checkatrade Trophy third round – after drawing bitter rivals Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
United’s Under-21s will be facing Sunderland’s first team with the Black Cats expected to play a full-strength team due to their third flight status.
Although, Ben Dawson’s side are permitted to play two senior players in their line-up if they please – something they have opted against in the competition so far this season.
Not that they’ve needed them after topping their group after wins over Doncaster Rovers, Notts County and Grimsby Town before beating Macclesfield Town on penalties at St James’ Park to set up a North East derby.
Newcastle’s reserves have already hammered Sunderland’s second string 5-0 this season, and they dumped the Wearsiders out of the Premier League International Cup last term.
But this will be a much harder test against the League One promotion hopefuls.
The game will take place in early January and should attract a big crowd.
Sky Sports don’t usually screen live games until the semi-finals but may yet be interested in a game that will capture the media’s attention.
