Good cod catches after dark from rock marks

- BY ALAN CHARLTON

COD continue to be taken from the rock edge marks mainly after dark with bigger fish to 7lb reported.

Any of the rock edge marks between Roker and South Shields pier and North of the Tyne can be productive with recent south-easterly seas producing the best sport.

Hendon Wall has seen cod to 5lb landed with some anglers taking several cod per session.

Both Roker Pier and S.shields pier have produced whiting, flatties, and cod to 5lb, but whiting seem to dominate, taking worm, mackerel and bluey baits.

The end of Roker has seen bags of up to 30 quality whiting and Rathouse Corner in the Wear has also been a good bet for whiting.

The river Tyne seems to be a little bit quiet but cod to 2lb have been taken from the mid river marks.

The very upper reaches of both rivers have produced quality flounders to 2lb taking worm and mackerel baits.

Newbiggin A.C. had a good result in their midweek match fishing in a strong SW wind with 23 cod and five flats weighed in for 65.08lb. D.greatrex fished Lynemouth to land four fish for 17.11lb, best 7.04lb. G.foster had five for 12.14lb from the Scarborough hole at Newbiggin, G.hays had two for 6.15lb, best 5.13lb, and G.scott had a five-fish mixed bag for 5.03lb taken from the East End Sands. S.B.R.A.A.C. also had a good result fishing in a productive SE sea with 16 out of 20 anglers weighing in 37 cod and two flounders. Steve Alexander won with five cod for 18.01lb taken at Hartley, Peter Stewart had five for 10.01lb at Blyth beach, Brendan Soulsby had five fish for 9.14lb at Newbiggin, and there was a tie for the h.s.f with Phil Smithson and Iain Galbraith each having cod of 6.12lb.

Peter Saint won an East End match with two fish for 5.03lb, best 4.00lb taken at Cullercoats. A Whitley Bay winter league match fished in calm conditions still saw a few fish move inshore under cover of darkness with five out of 11 weighing in. David Airey won with a nice single cod of 7.02lb taken at Seaton Sluice, ahead of Don Nicholson with two cod for 4.13lb taken at Whitley Bay. Similar conditions still produced fish for a Seaton Sluice A.C. match won by Mal Mcintyre with six cod, best 3.11lb, and one flounder for 13.11lb, ahead of Darren Swan with a seven-fish mixed bag for 5.02lb.

By contrast, fishing in daylight a Tynemouth match only produced a winning bag of four whiting and one dab for 2.03lb taken by Steve Harper.

Inshore boat fishing has been productive when conditions allow with the still-underrated technique of uptiding producing some nice fish.

Northeast Charters had a recent trip out taking 20 bigger fish to 10lb with smaller specimens returned.

Some weekend spaces may still be available at £35 per person and with a maximum of six anglers there is plenty of space to fish. Contact Richy Carr 07718 165231.
