Night time is the right time for mixed bags

- BY ALAN CHARLTON

WITH a nice bit of sea running last week and relatively big tides, some nice bags of cod were reported throughout the region.

A night-time session continues to produce the best results but all of the popular marks have seen mixed bags of cod, whiting and flatties showing in daylight hours.

The rock edges and cliffs at Ryhope have seen bags of up to seven or eight cod with the best around the 7lb mark.

Whitburn and Marsden have seen similar results, as have the various rock edge marks North of the Tyne. Roker pier and S.shields pier have both produced some interesting mixed bags with best cod around the 5lb mark and lots of whiting on most tides.

The river Tyne has improved with cod around 3lb showing from the lower river marks and quality flounders are taking the classic winter bait of lugworm tipped with mackerel from the upriver marks.

The Whitley Bay A.S. night open saw a good weigh-in with 17 out of 39 bringing 37 cod and a lone dogfish to the scales.

Steve Williams fished St Mary’s Island to land five cod for 11.01lb. John Burnyeat had four for 8.08lb from Sharpness, Darren Swan four cod and a dogfish for 8.04lb, also from St. Mary’s, and James Patterson had four for 8.01lb. Chris Robson had the h.s.f. with a cod of 7.02lb, which put him into fifth place.

There are still cod to be had from the rock edge marks during a nighttime session even in relatively settled conditions.

Richy Carr won a Cleadon match with four for 3.82kg ahead of Andrew Brotherton with two for 1.66kg. Seaton Sluice fished in calm seas and Darren Swan did well to land eight cod for 11.11lb, D.burke had the h.s.f. with a cod of 6.01lb. Chris Robson had a nine-fish mixed bag of 6.02lb to win the Tynemouth Christmas match.

The Cloughton open saw 46 out of 105 weigh in with the top three h.s.f. being very close. The £500 top prize went to Col Stainthorpe with a cod of 5.11lb, Dennis Thompson had one of 5.10lb and Luke Mccourt one of 5.07lb.

The heaviest bag was won by Luke Ingle with 11 cod for 21.06lb ahead of Chez Hunt with seven for 19.13lb.
